Uttarakhand APO Eligibility 2026–27: LL.B Qualification, Age Limit, Domicile, Reservation and Medical Rules

By Target for IQ Editorial Team   |   Last reviewed: 9 October 2026   |   Official new notice: awaited

Important 2026–27 update: As of our review on 9 October 2026, we could not verify a fresh Uttarakhand APO 2026–27 recruitment advertisement on UKPSC's official website. The qualifications and conditions below are drawn from advertisement A-1/E-2/APO/2021, issued on 3 August 2021, and its recruitment records. They are a previous-cycle reference, not a new notification. Dates, age limits, reservation provisions and other rules must be checked again once UKPSC issues its next advertisement.

A degree in law is the starting point for an Assistant Prosecution Officer (APO) career, but it is not the only requirement. Before applying to the Uttarakhand Public Service Commission (UKPSC), candidates should check their age on the prescribed cut-off date, understand how Uttarakhand domicile affects reservation benefits, and prepare the certificates needed for verification.

Important: Do not use the 2021 age cut-off or assume the 2021 age range is final for 2026. Until the fresh notification appears, any age calculation for the new recruitment would be speculative.

1. Educational Qualification: Is an LL.B Degree Enough?

For the 2021 Uttarakhand APO recruitment, the essential educational qualification was a law degree from a recognised university. Candidates holding a qualifying three-year LL.B after graduation or an eligible five-year integrated law degree could assess eligibility against the recognised degree requirement. Recognition of the awarding institution and completion of the qualification by the relevant deadline remain important.

The older advertisement did not prescribe two or three years of legal practice as a compulsory entry requirement. That point should not be confused with eligibility rules of APP/APO recruitments in other states, where professional experience may be mandatory.

A candidate who is still awaiting final results should be especially careful. The relevant UKPSC advertisement specifies when qualifications must already be held. Appearing in the examination or expecting to pass is not, by itself, evidence of having completed the degree.

Preferential qualifications in the 2021 recruitment

The 2021 rules also mentioned preferences when other selection factors were equal. They were not replacements for an LL.B degree:

  • At least two years of service in the Territorial Army; or
  • Possession of an NCC 'B' Certificate.

These were preference provisions, not mandatory eligibility conditions for every candidate. Whether they will continue in 2026–27 is yet to be specified.

2. Uttarakhand APO Age Limit: Read the Cut-off Date Carefully

The old age bracket is useful for planning, but candidates must avoid treating it as the final 2026 rule. The 2021 advertisement used the following figures:

Age-related rule2021 notification reference
Minimum age21 years
Maximum age42 years
Date on which age was assessed1 July 2021
Upper-age relaxationAs permitted under the then-applicable Uttarakhand government rules and orders
2026–27 age cut-offNot officially confirmed

The distinction between current age and age on the cut-off date is crucial. For example, being 42 today does not automatically determine eligibility for a future examination; the Commission must first announce which date it will use.

Will reserved-category candidates receive age relaxation?

In 2021, the advertisement allowed eligible categories and sub-categories to claim relaxation according to the relevant government orders. A single relaxation period should not be presumed for every SC, ST, OBC, EWS, ex-serviceman or other claimant: the category, residence, applicable order and documentary requirements matter. The 2026–27 notice will determine the applicable benefits.

3. Uttarakhand Domicile: Is State Residence Compulsory?

This is one of the most misunderstood eligibility questions. Under the 2021 rules, Uttarakhand domicile was connected to state reservation benefits; it was not stated as a universal condition that all applicants must be Uttarakhand residents.

An otherwise eligible applicant from another Indian state could consider competing for posts open to candidates without the Uttarakhand-specific reservation benefit, subject to every other condition in the notification. However, claiming state-specific SC/ST/OBC/EWS or horizontal reservation normally required the relevant Uttarakhand resident status and certificates under the rules then in force.

Candidate situationPractical interpretation of the 2021 approach
LL.B holder living in UttarakhandMay assess both general eligibility and relevant state reservation claims; valid proof is essential
LL.B holder from another stateDomicile alone was not an automatic bar to all participation, but Uttarakhand-specific reservation could not be assumed
Uttarakhand reserved-category applicantMust establish the applicable category and residence with certificates in the prescribed format
Candidate born in Uttarakhand but without the required certificateBirthplace alone should not be treated as automatic documentary proof for claiming reservation
Key takeaway: Ask two separate questions: “Can I apply?” and “Can I claim Uttarakhand reservation?” The answers may differ. Both must be checked against the future official notice.

4. Reservation Rules: Vertical and Horizontal Categories

The 2021 recruitment used a combination of vertical and horizontal reservation provisions. These are not interchangeable. Vertical reservation generally concerns communities or categories such as SC, ST, OBC and EWS, whereas horizontal reservations operate across applicable vertical categories for specified groups.

Reservation categories mentioned in the previous recruitment

TypeCategories or examples referenced in the 2021 frameworkImportant condition
Vertical reservationScheduled Castes (SC)Uttarakhand category/residence criteria and valid certificate
Vertical reservationScheduled Tribes (ST)Uttarakhand category/residence criteria and valid certificate
Vertical reservationOther Backward Classes (OBC)Appropriate state certificate and its validity
Vertical reservationEconomically Weaker Sections (EWS)Prescribed eligibility and certificate, as applicable
Horizontal / additional categoriesWomen, ex-servicemen, dependants of freedom fighters, orphans and specified disability categoriesOnly where provided by applicable orders and the post/category roster

Merely belonging to a community with the same name in another state does not establish entitlement to Uttarakhand reservation. A valid document must support the exact claim made in the application. In the 2021 process, the Commission also set a deadline for submitting self-attested evidence before the Main Examination; candidates must follow the new document submission schedule when published.

40% disability condition in the older advertisement

The 2021 recruitment referred to disability reservation for at least 40% disability in a prescribed category, subject to the suitability of identified posts and supporting certification. This was not a guarantee that every type of disability qualified for every post. Applicants should check the notified functional classifications, latest disability rules, medical certification requirements and available accommodations for the new cycle.

5. Nationality Requirements Under the Previous Rules

The 2021 advertisement prescribed a wider, conditional nationality framework than an India-only statement. The following descriptions are a historical summary, not confirmation of 2026–27 rules:

Applicant category in the 2021 provisionBasic condition
Citizen of IndiaIndian citizenship
Tibetan refugeeArrival in India before 1 January 1962 with the intention of permanent settlement
Person of Indian origin from countries specified in the previous advertisementMigration to India with the intention of permanent settlement; subject to applicable certification

The older notification named specified places including Pakistan, Burma (Myanmar), Sri Lanka, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, among others covered by the text. Applicants under the non-citizen categories faced additional eligibility-certificate requirements from designated authorities. They should not assume that being resident in India alone settles eligibility.

6. Character and Background: What Was Required?

A prosecution officer holds a position of public trust. Under the 2021 recruitment conditions, the candidate's character had to be appropriate for appointment to government service, with the appointing authority assessing suitability.

The old rules also addressed past dismissal from government service and conviction involving moral turpitude. Candidates should provide truthful information in declarations and verification forms rather than trying to infer the outcome of an individual legal issue from a general internet summary. UKPSC's fresh advertisement, the governing service rules and any applicable orders will control the assessment.

7. Marital Status Conditions

ApplicantCondition described in the 2021 notice
Male applicantA man with more than one living wife was not eligible under the stated clause
Female applicantA woman who married a man who already had a living wife was not eligible under the stated clause

These statements describe an earlier recruitment clause, not an interpretation of every possible personal-law situation or the final rule for 2026–27. Candidates should rely on the fresh advertisement and applicable law for exceptions, clarifications or changes.

8. Physical and Medical Fitness

The 2021 process required candidates to be medically suitable for efficient performance of official duties. It referred to sound physical and mental health, without a defect that would interfere with the discharge of duties, and required a fitness certificate following examination by a medical board before final approval for direct appointment.

Medical fitness should not be confused with a police-style physical efficiency test. No running-test, height or chest requirement should be invented for this recruitment without an express UKPSC rule. Disability reservation and reasonable accommodation are separate matters that must be assessed under the applicable recruitment and disability framework.

9. Documents Candidates Should Prepare in Advance

A little document planning can prevent last-minute problems once an application window opens. The exact upload size, format, authorities and submission deadlines will be set out in the new UKPSC notice.

DocumentWhy it may be needed
Class 10 / secondary certificateCommonly used to confirm date of birth and personal details
LL.B degree or final qualification documentEstablishes the prescribed law qualification
Relevant marksheetsSupports qualification records and completion date
Government-issued photo identity documentIdentity verification
Uttarakhand domicile / residence certificateWhere state reservation or relaxation is claimed
SC/ST/OBC/EWS certificateWhen claiming a notified category benefit
Benchmark disability certificateWhen claiming an eligible disability benefit or relevant accommodation
Ex-serviceman / other sub-category certificateFor a specific valid horizontal or other reservation claim
Territorial Army service proof or NCC 'B' CertificateOnly if claiming the historical preferential qualification, should it continue
Passport-size photograph and signatureIf required during online application
Other declarations or medical recordsOnly as directed at the relevant stage

Practical advice: Check that names, date of birth and other identifiers match across records. Do not obtain certificates merely on the basis of speculation; use the forms and authorities specified in the advertisement.

10. Eligibility Checklist: What to Verify When UKPSC Publishes the Notice

  1. Confirm the advertisement number and year. Do not mistake an old APO result, examination calendar entry or recruitment proposal for a fresh application notice.
  2. Read the essential qualification clause. Check recognition and the last date for possessing the LL.B qualification.
  3. Calculate age using UKPSC's announced cut-off. Apply relaxation only if the relevant rule covers your category.
  4. Separate domicile from basic eligibility. Identify whether you are seeking open-category consideration or a state-specific benefit.
  5. Match every reservation claim with current documents. Ensure certificates follow the required format and validity periods.
  6. Read character, marital-status and medical provisions. These may be assessed again at verification or appointment.
  7. Check the application window and examination instructions. No 2026–27 application date or examination date should be inferred from the previous cycle.

11. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q1. Has UKPSC released Uttarakhand APO Eligibility 2026–27?

A fresh APO 2026–27 advertisement could not be verified during our 9 October 2026 review. The 2021 notification is therefore a historical reference. Monitor the official UKPSC website for the definitive notice.

Q2. What is the minimum qualification for Uttarakhand APO?

The 2021 recruitment required a law degree (LL.B.) from a recognised university. Any new or additional 2026–27 qualification will be stated in the upcoming advertisement.

Q3. Can someone with a five-year integrated BA LL.B apply?

An eligible integrated law degree from a recognised institution may meet a Bachelor of Laws requirement, subject to how UKPSC defines qualifications in the new notice and whether the degree is completed by the prescribed date.

Q4. What was the age limit in the last Uttarakhand APO recruitment?

The 2021 advertisement prescribed 21 to 42 years, assessed on 1 July 2021. The 2026–27 age limit and age cut-off are not yet confirmed.

Q5. Is Uttarakhand domicile mandatory for every APO applicant?

The 2021 rules tied Uttarakhand domicile primarily to state-specific reservation benefits, not to an absolute bar on every out-of-state applicant. The new recruitment notice must be checked before applying.

Q6. Can an applicant from Uttar Pradesh, Delhi or another state apply?

Under the previous approach, applicants from outside Uttarakhand were not automatically excluded solely because of domicile, provided they met general eligibility rules. They could not simply claim Uttarakhand reservation on the strength of another state's certificate. Check the new notice.

Q7. Is two years of advocacy practice compulsory for UKPSC APO?

The 2021 APO advertisement did not list a compulsory two-year advocacy practice requirement. Do not transfer another state's APP/APO experience rule to Uttarakhand without verifying the fresh advertisement.

Q8. Does an NCC 'B' Certificate make a candidate eligible without LL.B?

No. In 2021, the NCC 'B' Certificate was a preferential qualification when other conditions were equal, not a substitute for the required law degree.

Q9. Will SC, ST, OBC, EWS and other candidates receive age or reservation benefits?

Benefits depend on category, domicile, prescribed documents, recruitment rules and current government orders. UKPSC will specify the applicable details in its new advertisement.

Q10. Is 40% disability sufficient for reservation?

The old notification mentioned a 40% threshold for specified disability categories, but eligibility also depended on identified posts and appropriate certification. The new vacancy and disability provisions must be examined.

Q11. Is a medical test required for Uttarakhand APO?

The 2021 conditions provided for medical-board assessment and a fitness certificate before final approval for appointment. Updated medical conditions will be determined by the next notice and relevant rules.

Q12. Can a final-year LL.B student apply?

Do not assume so. Candidates need to meet the qualification-completion date set by the advertisement. The next notice will establish whether and how pending results are treated.

Q13. Where should I check the authentic UKPSC APO notification?

Use the official Uttarakhand Public Service Commission website and its recruitment-notification section. For the historical recruitment, see the official 2021 APO examination notice, which refers to advertisement A-1/E-2/APO/2021. A third-party archive of the 2021 advertisement is available for reference, but the Commission's current original advertisement takes precedence.

Final Word

The safest way to approach Uttarakhand APO Eligibility 2026–27 is to use earlier rules for preparation, not as a guarantee of admission. The previous recruitment required an LL.B degree and used an age range of 21–42 years, while state domicile shaped reservation eligibility. Nationality, character, marital status, medical fitness and documentary proof also mattered. The new UKPSC notification will be final on every eligibility condition, category relaxation and deadline.
